Rants from a Jamaican British Woman

Monday, August 14, 2006

Like many Londoners, I've been enjoying the glorious summer weekends and the vast range of activities that we in London are so privileged to enjoy in our fabulous parks, theatres, museums, galleries etc. I am perplex though. God forbids, but my questions is - if we are to believe our goverment who constantly tells us that we are all the time in imminent danger of being blown up by fanaticals, how comes these people are not choosing the endless very easy targets that are presented to them on an almost daily basis. Afterall no one search you at the entrance to a park gate, a theatre, a museum, cinemas, galleries. Of course like anyone else my nerves are absolutely rattled at these critical, severe warnings. But you know what.! I am not about to let either terrorists or government frighten me into stopping living my life. I suspect that these chances of being run over by a bus, or some mad person driving with a fag in one hand and a mobile in another are rather higher than being blown up by a terrorist. Now if I were living in Bagdad, it would be a very different matter. What was the latest death figure for the humble street cleaner in Bagdad over the past two months? Yes, you've got it right. 360 young men were blown to smithereens just cleaning the street. But you know what? They're only Iraqi's. Their lives clearly aren't worth a fraction of our British lives! This government need to get real and stop this riddiculous denying that our Foreign Policies along with the policies of Bush and his cronies are creating havoc across the globe. Blair and his government have blood on their hands and that blood is as red as that spilt in the September 11th attrocities, the July attrocities here in Britain and attrocities around the world where the search for absolute power and greed is what drives some people. I have a stunning little grand daughter and my absolute wish, hope is for her to grow up in a world which is less hateful, a world where people are not continually committing the most awful attrocities in the name of God. What kind of God are our world leaders praying to? Are they all praying to a God that does not teach humility, that does not demand that they are less greedy, that does not demand that they treat each other with a little more respect? What kind of God tell world leaders to carpet bomb women and children, to maim and kill indescriminately? Life is the most precious thing that we have. Can the politicians and endless people who blow themselves and others up for a 'cause' not understand that the killing must stop, that it is not the answer? And why is it not as simple as that? We none of us can give life, and we none of us to should take life. It is as simple as that.
Consider this Mr Blair and Mr Bush. Between you, you've had created a very different world for any grandchildren you might have in the future from the world you both grew up in. Yes it is true that we have always had conflict around the globe. And yes it's true that the West have always butted into everyone's conflict, but this feels very different. I believe the fight this time is about absolute world supremacy. The West want it, and if it means lying to its own peoples on huge scales and detablishing governments across the globe, then that's a war they are prepared to fight. And it seems, to hell with the endless loss of lives. God help us.
